Orchid Photo Sites Eric Likes
for the truly addicted
- Jay Pfahl's OrchidSpecies Site
- Jay has assembled the most comprehensive set of orchid species photographs
on the Internet today. My efforts on this site pale by comparison to the monument
to orchid species he has created. OrchidSpecies.com is invaluable for researching
orchid species, and I use it every time I sit down and work on this site.
Got a new species that's not in bloom? Jay probably has it on OrchidSpecies.com.
Help him out by contributing photos of orchid species in your collection that
aren't already on his site.
- Ron Parsons - Ron is one of the best known orchid and botany photographers in the world. His great photos are found throughout the site - click away!
- Lynn's
Pleurothallids - Lynn O'Shaughnessy is the newsletter editor for the Pleurothallid
Alliance and their website editor. She has a stunning collection of both
species and hybrid pleurothallids, and documents many of them on her website.
I can get lost for hours browsing and reading about her plants.
- PhragWeb - The Phragmipedium Website
(Including Mexipedium and Selenipedium) is run by Rob Zuiderwijk. It contains
an incredible wealth of information, including great pictures, about all things
Phragmipedium. Species and hybrids are covered.
- Dracula Species Database -
Excellent reference for all species in the genus Dracula. Tons of photos.
Run by Chad Sarles.

An ambitious and well-done general survey of orchid species. Thousands of well-organized photos of over 3000 species. By Dalton Holland Baptista and Americo Docha Neto.
- Vortex's Orchids - A hobbyist from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with a great set of photos. Worth a look!
- Abundiflora -
Weyman Bussey is an American who has traveled extensively in Mexico - you will find a large selection of Mexican orchid species photos here.
- Wild Terrestrial Orchids in South-Eastern
Australia - Reiner Richter has an extensive website devoted to the wild
terrestrial orchids he encounters on his walks through the nature preserves
near his home of Victoria, Australia. Superb in-situ photos of dozens
of different species. Due to Australia's quarantine laws and the unique mycorrhizal
requirements of these orchids, most people outside of Australia will never
get to see many of these species. A big thanks to Reiner for putting such
an amazing resource out for those of us outside Australia.
- Bulbophyllum from A to
Z - A great site from Europe - run by Rudolf Hromniak and Anton Sieder
and another gentleman named Rudi. Extensive galleries of Bulbophyllum images
are the main focus, but there are articles on taxonomy as well.
- Futura Sciences - a well-known
French science education nonprofit has taken a subset of my orchid photos
and presented them to the French-speaking web. Use AltaVista's Babelfish to
translate the site into English - very well done site.
- The Pleione Website - Run by Paul
Cumbleton, this is the definitive site on the Net for pleione information.
The photographs are breathtaking and very thorough - usually covering many
different clones of each species or hybrid.
- Papua New Guinea Orchid News
- very well done site by Wolfgang H. Bandisch. Contains innumerous pictures
of all orchids endemic and found in Papua New Guinea. Well worth a visit.
- Brazilian Orchids by Delfina de
Arau - One of the most comprehensive sites on the web for Brazilian orchids.
The site is the home of Orchid News - a periodic newsletter with articles
about Brazilian orchids, orchid researchers, or anything else regarding Brazilian
Orchids. Lots of good information and photographs.
- Species Orchid
Society of Western Australia - This orchid society Down Under has a great
collection of photos of the local species orchids found in the western part
of Australia.
- Ron
Griesbeck Memorial Photo Library - Ron was an accomplished grower and
photographer of species orchids, with a concentration on Pleurothallids, especially
Telipogons and more unusual genera. He passed away in 2002, and his photos
have been placed online in a memorial photo library. Great stuff from a talented
man.
- Merkle's Orchids - Ed Merkle
is an independent orchid grower in Nashville, TN, specializing in Phals and
more importantly, doing some awesome photography of his plants, including
a good number of species. His Cattleya and Phalaenopsis species photo pages
are especially nice. Check it out!

grower specializing in the unusual phal hybrids, especially those from Taiwan.
A very photo and information rich site for those with any interest in Phalaenopsis.

Miranda runs an orchid nursery in Florida that emphasizes Brazilian species.
His website has many pages devoted to Brazilian species, including superb
in-situ and flower closeup shots.
- Terrestrial Orchid Gallery -
Nice gallery of images of various terrestrial orchids. It is the companion
photo gallery to the Terrestrial
Orchid Forum.
- Prem's Orchid Gallery
- Prem is a Florida native who grows great plants and spends a lot of time
driving around Florida photographing the native orchids in that state. Another
talented photographer with lots of excellent photos and lots of information
about the species he photographs.
- Not So Green Thumb - A quality
site done by a Bay Area orchid/technology afficionado. Lots of excellent pictures
of all kinds of orchids, mostly hybrids. Worth a visit!
- Dustin Dorton's
site - An orchid hobbyist who also takes great pictures of his plants.
Especially strong in Phalaenopsis.
- Greg Allikas' Orchid Photos
- Greg Allikas is the orchid photographer many of us aspire to be. His photos
are almost otherworldly in their beauty. He doesn't update his site very often,
but I still look at everything on there every few months.
- Brazilian Plants by
Mauro Peixoto - extensive pages devoted to plants found in Brazil, including
orchids. The orchid pages are amazing, but the rest of the pages devoted to
other families of plants are just as exciting. In English and Portguese.
- The Stanhopea Pages
- Nina Rach in Houston has been bitten by the Stanhopea bug. Check out her
fact and photo filled site about one of the weirdest and coolest orchid tribes
- Stanhopea!
- The Sobralia Pages - Nina Rach
isn't content to have a great site on Stanhopeas, she has to go and create
one of the best sites for Sobralias! Sobralias are a mostly terrestrial orchid
genus found in Central and South America that has exceptionally gorgeous flowers.
- The Orchid Lady's
photo pages - Linda Fortner is the Orchid Lady, and she provides an amazing
website for orchid enthusiasts. Here is the section she devotes to orchid
photographs. Unfortunately, some of the large size images are missing, but

- HBI
Inc. Photo Album - Mick Fournier is a very active orchid breeder in Florida

well organized photo album of his plants, linked here.
- Gallery
of Thelymitras - The late Ron Heberle in Australia allowed a society Down
Under to put up an extensive gallery of his photographs of these relatively
unknown (outside of Australia) brightly colored terrestrial orchids. Be the
first in your society to know what they are and how to pronounce them!
- Florida Nature Photography - Extensive collection of naturalist photos from the state of Florida, USA. Particularly good photos of the native orchids and wildflowers, but the entire site is a visual treat.
Please contact me me if you would like to
be listed here. I can't list everyone, but if you've got a good set of orchid
photographs online in an easy to use website, I'd love to include you.
